THE SOLID ROCK

It's almost Christmas......and the melodies and lyrics of all the wonderful old, and new, Christmas hymns and songs are filling the air. Along with all the Christmas decorations and dispays everywhere. I have always loved Christmas!!! It is such a special time.....and it's also my Birthday which makes it double precious to me.

Amidst all of the above the melody and lyrics of this beautiful old hymn, lyrics by Edward Mote and music by William B Bradbury written in 1834, keep ringing through my mind and in my Spirit. Just think....a hundred and seventy three years ago!! This is one of the many old hymns I grew up on and my early Christian walk were formed by.

THE SOLID ROCK

vs 1: My hope is built on nothing less

Than Jesus blood and righteousness;

I dare not trust the sweetest frame,

But wholly lean on Jesus' name.

vs 2: When darkness seems to hide his face,

I rest on his unchanging grace;

In every high and stormy gale,

My anchor holds within the vale.

vs3: His oath, His covenant, His blood,

Support me in the whelming flood;

When all around my soul gives way,

He then is all my hope and stay.

vs 4: When he shall come with trumpet sound,

Oh, may I then in him be found;

Dressed in His righteousness alone,

Faultless to stand before the throne.

Chorus: On Christ, the solid rock I stand;

All other ground is sinking sand,

All other ground is sinking sand.

  6. I have always loved this hymn. It really became more meaningful to me when I married a man that works in a limestone quarry - and how I can see all the layers in the rock and what needs to be done to it to blast it away because it is such a strong foundation!!

    Wishing you a very merry Christmas and a very happy birthday!!! If I could, I'd be ringing your doorbell to come sing and pull your ears! heehee :-D

  13. I love the old hymns and am so sad that so many are not being exposed to them at all, but only choruses which will come and go with the generations. I could get on my soapbox about that, but will not. I just praise the Lord that we still sing them in our service at our church.

    Today I head something singing "White Christmas" on our Christian station. Then she ended it with "Whiter than Snow." It thought that was really great.

    I am so far behind. It's Christmas morning and I'm waiting for my caramel rolls to rise so I can bake them and get over to my mom and dad's house for brunch. I LOVE your Christmas tree skirt. What a lot of work.

    We have lots of December birthdays and anniversaries in our family, too. Makes for a wild and crazy month!

    Have a wonderful, blessed, peace-filled Christmas. How's David doing?

  27. >In every high and stormy gale, My anchor holds within the vale

    That's an interesting metaphor. It seems to be rather confused, why should an anchor be used in a vale?

  28. Maalie - In answer to your question: Websters unabridged
    1) A tract of low ground between hills; a valley (chiefly Poet.)
    2) A little trough of canal; as a pump vale to carry off the water from a ships pump.
    3) figuratively, a state of decline or wretchedness.

  29. Yes, I know what those words mean, Penless. My point is that they are being used metaphorically. Now, it might be nice and poetical but my problem is that once the metaphor is stripped away and you study it closely, it doesn't actually seem to mean much, if anything.

  30. I was thinking about this metaphor today and found your discussion on it. I too was wondering what the metaphor might have meant to the writer.

    My interest in this mostly lies in the fact that I think this is such a truly inspired song and I just wanted to know.
