FRUGAL SHOPPING - Sweet Potatoes

I am very careful with our food budget. One of the ways I save it to take advantage of the current items on sale. Wa*lm*art had these on sale for 25 cents a lb.
I bought 7.01 lb of them for a total cost of $1.75

Peeled them & cut them up.

Here they are boiling away and it didn't take very long for them to be done and ready for mashing.

I put 1 cup in a baggie and sealed it. Result: 11 cup baggies. $1.75 divided by 11 = 15.9 cents per cup. The cheapest canned sweat potatoes were 2/3 cup for 92 cents. To purchase my 11 cups canned would have cost $15.18 vs $1.75 (11 cups divided by 2/3 per can = 16.5 cans @ 92 cents). $15.18 - $1.75 = a savings of $13.43.

Note: I placed the individual baggies on cookie sheets and froze solid before I stacked them up on the freezer shelf.

Then I went back to the store & bought 5 more large sweet potatoes for $1.14. I am going to bake these today and freeze them individually. I will be able to feed us baked sweet potato on 5 different occasions for only 23 cents (11.5 per Mickey & 11.5 per me). I had bought a sweet potato just a few days ago at my local market for $.99 a lb. My one sweet potato weighed .68 lbs @ $.99 = $.67 vs the $.23. A savings of $2.20.
($.67 - $.23 =$.44 x 5 = $2.20)

The other plus. is having my oven on 1 time at 400 degrees for 60 minutes instead of
5 separate times so saving on energy, too.

Taking advantage of this one sale item saved me $15.63 ($13.43 + $2.20 = $15.63. That's being frugal.

I may go buy some more before next Tuesday when the sale ends!!!!

I bought some yesterday and I hope to go back for more before the sale ends. You can't beat the price. We made oven fries out of them last night and they were really good. I hope to post on it next week. Walmart has some other good stuff on sale too.

Great job! I don't like sweet potatoes - but I do buy my meats in bulk and freeze in smaller servings.

I also do this with the bigger bags of shredded cheese when it's on sale.

Wow what a fantastic idea. I love sweet potatoes. I can't believe the price you paid for those. I didn't think you could get anything that cheap.

Excellent!! Not to mention they are full of fiber and vitamin A and C and so tasty!! =) Our WalMart has them for the same price. I haven't picked any up yet, but I may (I still have 4 more pumpkins to deal with though, so I need to do that first I think!)

YOu are indeed becoming the Frugal Queen. Sounds like a good deal (if you like yams, which I don't happen to - oh, well!)

I LOVE the previous post about carrying stress. I will be making sure Kristen reads it.

you have a lot of numbers rattling around in that post, but they're all low - which is the point of it all. thanks for sharing how easy it can be to save money. it may be more work initially, but in the long run, it's not and you're able to save quite a bit of money.

have a great weekend, susan.

Hi Susan,
I'm going out to get some. We're not big on the sweet potato casserole (you know, the one with marshmellows) but I did run across a recipe for bisquits using SP's and then there's the pie!
One way we really enjoy them is as baked cottage fries (sprinkled with a light cajun seasoning and dipped in lite sr. cream/dill dip...doesn't sound like it goes together, but it is tasty!) Reason for that rabbit trail is to ask, can the fries be frozen?
I'm enjoying your frugal tips.
Have a wonderful weekend and hugs to you both.
Brenda :)

That's a great price. I love sweet potatoes, they are so good for you! You certainly are very thrifty! I am working on it but need to do better.

We don't have a Super Walmart close to us and this time around I planned my menus for a whole month. I just went to SuperWalmart last week, but because of distance, I won't go again for a few weeks.
But our local market has them for $.42 a pound. I am going to pick some up.

I love doing roast mixed veg, and I use peppers, sweet potato, potato, onions, butternut and parsnips and sometimes, garlic. It tastes wonderful. Sweet potatoes are a real favourite around here.

Have a super weekend, Susan!
