SIMPLE WHOLE WHEAT BREAD

Leanne asked me to share the bread recipe, so here it is.

SIMPLE WHOLE WHEAT BREAD

3 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)

2 (.25 ounce ) packages active dry yeast (I actually used 2 scant tablespoons of Fleisch*mann's active dry)

1/3 cup honey

5 cups bread flour (I actually used all purpose white flour)

3 tablespoons butter, melted

1/3 cup honey

1 tablespoon salt

3 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

2 tablespoons butter, melted

Directions:

1. In a large bowl, mix warm water, yeast, and 1/3 cup honey. Add 5 cups white bread flour, and stir to combine. Let set for 30 minutes, or until big and bubbly.

2. Mix in 3 tablespoons melted butter, 1/3 cup honey, and salt. Stir in 2 cups whole wheat flour. Flour a flat surface and knead with whole wheat flour until not real sticky - just pulling away from the counter, but still sticky to touch. This may take an additional 2 to 4 cups of whole wheat flour. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to coat the surface of the dough. Cover with a dishtowel. Let rise in a warm place until doubled.

3. Punch down, and divide into 3 loaves. Place in greased 9x5 inch loaf pans, and allow to rise until dough has topped the pans by one inch.

4. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 25 to 30 minutes, do not over bake. Lightly brush the tops of loaves with 2 tablespoons melted butter or margarine when done to prevent crust from getting hard. Cool completely.

I love fresh bread.

This sounds good. I only have one 9x5 pan. Do you bake them all at one time or one by one.

Hmmm, I was thinking I had this recipe, but when I looked, I didn't see it. So, thanks for posting!! I just might have everything...not sure if I still have whole wheat flour - but if I do, I'll be making it in the near, near future...like tomorrow! :-)

G'night!

OK Ladies, you can pray for me as I am experiencing a tinge of jealousy. We're here in Phoenix about ready to turn on the AC and ya'll are enjoying snow (and ice, so be careful!), and fresh baked bread, pumpkin goodies and the like. Great pictures. What a blessing you are in your home, and beyond Susan. Thanks for sharing the recipes, and I think I can shake off the jealousy thing. : )

I now wish I could have a freshly baked bread, real bread. Not those baked with substitute flours.

I haven't made whole wheat bread in forever. I use to make it all the time. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing the recipe.

I had to laugh at your cut loaf of bread. I love the end pieces right out of the oven.

And that sure does look good with jelly too.

For Joy in the Burbs ... you can bake bread out of a pan. Just form it into whatever shape you want. I often do round. You can bake it ... like me ... on a baking stone with parchment paper, or I would imagine just on a plain cookie sheet.
