SHOW & TELL #22 - William Marshall Joyce, Jr.

Okay.....Here it is Friday again and Show & Tell time at Kelli's of There Is No Place Like Home. Go here and find out ALL about it, if you don't already know. Then pick something to Show and Tell us about. Put it on Mr. Linky's at Kelli's and then have a great time visiting all the other Show & Tell posts. It's such fun. Trust me!!!

This weeks Show and Tell has very important sentimental value

It is a picture of William Marshall Joyce, Jr. who was born 11-26-1923. This picture was taken some time in 1930 as he died 3-15-1930 at the age of 6 years old of spinal meningitis.

This is Mickey's oldest brother who would have been 9 years old, had he lived, when Mickey was born 11-24-1932.

Mickey had heard of him all his life but had never seen a picture. He did not even know a picture of Junior existed. When Mickey's younger sister died in January, 2006 one of his cousins came to the funeral in Tennessee and brought Mickey this picture. You can imagine how thrilled Mickey was to receive this wonderful gift.

The white area at the top of the photograph is actually a flaw in the picture taking for this post. The picture was taken outside and the sun shown through the back. The original picture is in perfect condition and in it's original 1930 era antique frame and glass. The picture had to be taken outside because of the glare of the flash on the glass if taken inside.

Thank you for letting me share this wonderful Joyce Family treasure with you.

First of all what a beautiful and tragic story. How sad that his older brother died as a child and he never got to meet him or even see a picture, but then finally did get to see the picture. It must have been so emotional for him. I hope he is comforted in the fact that he will see him someday in heaven!

Secondly, I LOVE the photo and frame, absolutely beautiful. I love that era. Thanks for sharing!

Blessings to you! Sharon

How cool is that! What a great treasure. I have an older brother who died shortly after birth and I remember as a kid I always used to wonder how my life would have been different with an older brother around to protect me from bullies in school.

Precious keepsake, Susan!
My husband has a similar family history in that one of his sisters died from a virus right before he was born...there's a photo of her, too. So sad.
Thanks for sharing this special photo with us.

Wow, what a treasure for Mickey to have this picture. It's so easy to forget that there was a time when pictures were not so readily available or affordable. I'm glad that Mickey has it now.

these precious babies who leave while still young do leave a mark on our hearts, even when we were born to late to have met them!

groovyoldlady said...

That is totally awesome! It's as good as when I found out that some of those cute baby pics in my mom's photo album weren't of a neighbor's boy as she had told me for so many years. They were pics of my own BROTHER whom she had been forced to give up for adoption...

Susan Kelly Skitt said...

A precious treasure... My son appreciates the picture of his dad, my first husband. I had a small one framed for him. It was a picture of him on his dad's shoulders taken about one months before my husband died. Since Jared was nine-months old when he died, it means a lot.

Barbara said...

Wasn't that great that Mickey could have that photo after all of those years.

Stephanie said...

Oh, what a treasure this must have been for your husband to receive! Aren't you glad it didn't go the way of some old family photos--the ones where no one knows who the pic is of, so they just toss it, or donate it to Goodwill or a garage sale, just for the frame? Did your husband see a resemblance to his big brother?

Paula said...

What a wonderful surprise! The color in the photo as really stood the test of time. I'm sure the photo has a place of honor in your home.
