CINDY McCAIN -

This is an e-mail I received

There was an article in the Wall Street Journal on Cindy McCain, John's wife. All I ever saw was this attractive woman standing beside John. I was surprised how talented and involved with world problems she is. This is a summary of the article.

She graduated from Southern Cal and was a special-needs teacher. After her Dad died she became involved with his beer distributing firm and is now the chairwoman. Sales have doubled since she has taken over from her father.

They have a marriage prenuptial agreement, her assets remain separate. She is involved around the world clearing land mines - travels to these countries on a detonation team and serves on their board.

They have a 19 year old serving in Iraq - another son in the Naval Academy, a daughter recentrly graduated from Columbia University, and adopted daughter in high school, and a son who is the finance guy at the beer firm.

Raised kids in Phoenix, AZ rather than Washington DC (better atmosphere) He commuted.

In 1991, Mrs. McCain came across a girl in an orphanage in Bangladesh with a severe cleft palate. The couple adopted the girl who has had a dozen operations to repair her cleft palate and other medical problems.

They have a Family Foundation for children's causes.

She's active with "Halo Trust" - to clear land mines, provide water and food in was ravaged and developing countries.

She will join an overseas mission of "Operation Smile", a charity for corrective surgery on children's faces.

She has had two back surgeries and became addicted to pain killers. She talks openly about it, which she says is part of the recovery process.

I'm surprised the media is so quiet about her attributes. We would really get two for the price of one. A person with business and international experience. John did work for the firm for awhile when he left the Navy. She, however, has the real business experience.

I have found it an interesting business for an Evangelical Baptist to own. I wonder if Cindy will sell the beer distributorship if her husband becomes president.

A few concerns that I have as I puruse Mrs McCain's history are..

..how (when she was 24) she chose to be involved with a 42 year old McCain while he was still married.

..how she covered up her drug addiction from her husband for years and only told him after she was caught stealing drugs from a charity that she ran in the early 90s.

..how she chose to remain in Arizona and settled to see her husband only on weekends. The Bangledesh adoption story is a scary one.. she did it without consulting her husband.

..how her beer distibutorship fights taxes on alchohol in Arizona.. but my understanding is that her role in the company is strictly hands off.

..her father was charged and convicted of selling alcohol on the black market.

On a positive note I agree that she seems to be a genuine philanthropist that has a heart for helping "the least of these".

Hope this didn't come across as anti-McCain.. I just want to know the whole story before I vote.

Interesting insights Susan. I am quite certain that no matter the candidate or their spouse, you can always find the good, bad, and ugly, as the other poster here notes. What's important is where she is today seems to be in a place of growing, in my opinion. I cannot imagine living in the fishbowl that politicians and their families choose.

Thanks for your insight and information.

Hugs,

Susan

I'm not surprised the media has not talked about the good things about Cindy McCain. You can be sure they would be talking about them if she was a Democrat. We have certainly been reminded of every negative thing about her. This is just one of the things Republicans have to put up with.

I had heard much of that - she's very impressive. I'm not surprised at all that the media is ignoring these things.

Susan,

Wow, I am once again disappointed (not surprised) at our bent media system. Thanks for this.

I had to write twice, as my spelling is horrid.

WOW! I too wish the media would focus on more of these things. I'm trying to follow everything I can, but a lot of this was new to me! Thanks for the post! On to read about Sarah!

Just saw this tonight, Susan. I have learned never to expect perfection from our leaders nor their families. Actually, from anyone. But I expect to find and have a sense that they are people of decent quality and character and want the best for our nation and others in the world. I knew absolutely nothing about Cindy before the convention this week, but as the week progressed, and I learned more about her, I have come to really like her. I also have come to appreciate her husband more also. These are critical times. Lets keep on our knees.

Hi Susan,
I do not really know anything much about Mrs. McCain. I am learning in life that there are all levels of things within the lives of all people. We can see the good or we can see that bad....but the question for me is just what would I want people to see in me... my good or my bad? Would I want my measure to be my bad points..and to have that measure stay with me for my lifetime. Thank you for showing some points that are good about Cindy McCain.
