SHOW & TELL '08 - #16 - Old Rocking Chair

Yes, it's Friday again!!!! Boy the weeks, and now the months, are flying by. Go over to Kelli's and join in the fun. Pick something to show & tell about and then sign up on Mr. Linky and visit the other Show & Tell participants. It truly is a joy.

Yes, this is a rocking chair.....or rather I should say, it WAS a rocking chair.!!

When we were expecting our 3rd child, our girls were 8 & 9 years old so all the related baby items were long gone. I immediately told my husband that I wanted a rocking chair. I had to have a rocking chair to rock the new arrival. I love rocking babies!!

The time came and I gave birth to our first son and while in the hospital I was feeling a little disappointed and sad because my husband had not gotten a rocking chair. The day I came home from the hospital here was this wonderful gift awaiting me.....a maple rocking chair. This was in 1964 so the chair will be 44 years old come this June.

Our second son was born 5 years later so this chair got a lot of use rocking 2 babies.

These two sons of our loved to stand on the rocker bars so eventually they broke but I did not want to get rid of the chair so my husband cut the rockers off. Thus this very short legged chair that holds many memories and still get used in this household.

Thanks for letting me share my Show & Tell with you once again

My grandma has a rocker that looks exactly like that! Well, amazingly it still has the rocker bars, but I did love sitting in her lap in that chair. :)

Susan, my father bought that exact same rocking chair for my mom when I was born. I am 38. It ended up with me and in a fit of de-cluttering I gave it to Goodwill! I so regret that!! I was living in a small apartment at the time. At least I got to rock my daughter in it. I am glad you still have yours! Nice to see it again! Thanks for sharing.

So many times, people would just set something like that to the curb. How wonderful to sit in that chair and remember your children as babies and all of the feelings that must stir up inside!
How sweet!

I agree, it was too special to get rid of. I love rocking babies. I have a rocker on both floors for that reason. Great post.

Susan,

A wonderful family treasure and such great memories of rocking your sons.

I have the rocker that Dad gave to his Dad in the late 40s. A rocker on it was broken and I took it to have it repaired by a professional. I'm so glad I did.

Take care and enjoy your weekend.

aw so sweet! I wouldn't have wanted to get rid of it either! Your girls and boys are spaced apart about like my 2 boys are. My first born was nearly 11 yrs. old when I gave birth to my second child.

What a sweet story! And a great idea, cutting the broken rockers off to save the chair. I'm can imagine the kids loved climbing up on the short chair, feeling so grown up with their feet touching the ground! I love it!

A lovely story and sometimes to
save a wonderful treasure you
have to do the unthinkable to
keep using it safely.

What a sweet story! I loved my rocking chair, but we no longer have it. We'll have to get another one before grandbabies start coming in a few years!

This was so precious! Your show and tell posts are the best, Susan! What memories you have in your home. I wish my mom were alive because you are a woman after her own heart. She would have just LOVED to read your posts. (But I love them too.)There is nothing that money can buy which can compare to things we have like that rocking chair!

I love your rocking chair. My mother used to have one that looked a lot like your. I have always loved to rock babies. In fact I do it automatically with or without a rocking chair. The chair makes it a lot easier on the back.lol. connie from Texas
