Exciting Things Happening at The King's Kitchen

The King's Kitchen was given a very large anonymous gift in December, 2013.  After much prayer, and I truly mean MUCH prayer, and talking to our Chief Cook Sherry Kelly, it was decided it would be a blessing to add a convection oven to assist, not only The King's Kitchen in our weekly Tuesday preparation of meals to serve 50-55 shut-ins, but also for the church to use for Funeral Dinners, general Church dinners and various parties and activities that go on pretty constantly in our kitchen.

Next, was Mickey & Sherry researching various type and styles of convection ovens.  Once the choice for electric was arrived at then Mickey went to restaurant supply show rooms to view them, reading up on the various models, etc.  Once the Royal brand was determined to be the one of choice then Mickey presented it to the Pastor and Deacon Board for approval.  As always with improvements additional electric work had to be done, which meant another Board meeting and approval.  Next, locating and selecting the electrician to use, scheduling him and getting the work done.

Finally this chrome beauty arrived.
 Mickey has been working hard with all the details and procedures involved purchasing this lovely Royal brand Electric Convection Oven with 5 tray/racks, timers, heat controls, fans, cooling control - all the bells and whistles.

 July 1st Mickey is showing Sherry the oven and explaining some of the features and information to her.
That is one of our Super Soupers, Gayle working at the exising  stove preparing the soups to be added that Tuesday to the regular meal.

 The next project was Mickey selecting a larger Mixer, twice the size of the existing one.  The Young At Heart Adult group of the church added a donation of $700 (which was about 50% of the cost). Same procedure of ordering, board approval and waiting for delivery.  This beauty arrived and was picked up by Mickey on Thursday.

Yes, The King's Kitchen and Coweta Assembly of God are now the proud owners of these two beautiful additions thanks to the generosity of a wonderful anonymous gift and The Young At Heart group.

BLESSINGS of DOUGHNUTS

Broadway Bakery & Cafe recently opened downtown Coweta.  They are open for lunch and Mickey, Aric & I visited them recently on a Tuesday after King's Kitchen.

When the new owner found out we serve 50+ shuts-in's a meal every Tuesday they offered to donate the doughnuts that did not sell each Sunday (they are closed Mondays) for us to use on Tuesday's!!!

 We could not believe all the variety and boxeS (yes plural!!) we picked up.  Here is just a sampling of delicious, appealing variety of doughnuts.
The first week we were able to send out 3 items with each meal.

The quantity we get will, of course, depend on what is left each Sunday. The second week they were completely sold out.  Last week we were able to have 2 a piece for every delivery.

Mickey, Danny & Robin and the chests and racks they had just emptied for us!!

Today Mickey and I dropped in for lunch.  Mickey had a cheeseburger and I had a BLT and of course fresh made home style fries.  YUM!!!  My BLT was absolutely delicious and will probably become my "regular".

Everything is delicious so be sure and stop by, get to know this lovely couple and welcome them to our little burg of Coweta.

Just ANOTHER blessing from God for The King's Kitchen.

KING'S KITCHEN UPDATE

It was a special day at The King's Kitchen this morning.

 These are 3 of our main people who serve so faithfully each week.  Mickey has just given them each a T-shirt with the instructions to just fold it over their arms.  As you can see, they are laughing and Sherry has just said, "Oh, now we are going to get to start waiting on tables?"

Then Mickey says. "Ok, turn them over and see what they say!"
(left to right) Mother-Daughter team: Jodi & Gayle who have been making the extra soup we began sending out 11 months ago, October, 2012, theirs read SUPER SOUPERS

(far right) Sherry, who is our SUPER COOK, and has been with us since day one, when The King's Kitchen began 43 months ago,  February, 2010.

Yes, these 3 woman, who all arrive by 8:30 every Tuesday morning are the very back bone of this operation.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
School has started here in Coweta, but here are a couple of the children who  helped us during the summer months.
Calley, helping Kent & Tim at the sealing machine
Dusty helping Arlene & Eunice in the serving line as the trays are being filled and moved to the sealing machine.  Dusty has also helped Kent deliver meals to the 9 people on that route.
Callie & Dusty are the grandchildren of Ronnie who also helps fill-in on the route when needed.
Yes, it takes many hands, and the loving hearts and willingness of MANY people each and every Tuesday to make The King's Kitchen a reality.
The King's Kitchen - 3rd Anniversay
Three years ago today, on January 17, 2010, The King's Kitchen delivered it's very first meal to area shut-ins.
There are 5 delivery routes with a 2 people delivery team on each route.  A meal has been served every Tuesday (with the exception of of a couple of snow/ice days & this past Christmas).  The cooking team; composed of Sherrie, Mickey, Susan, Arlene & Eunice begin arriving at 8:30.  In October we added an extra meal of soup and crackers or bread, to be enjoyed either that night or the next day.  Mother-daughter team of Gayle & Jodi joined us to take care of this and they are already hard at work when we get there at 8:30.
This year, 1-1-12 to 1-31-12, we served a total of 2,541 meals at an average cost of $2.56. We delivered 51 weeks and did not deliver on Christmas Day, which fell on a Tuesday this year.  The cost of this ministry is supported totally by designated offerings from the church membership and has never lacked for funds & support.  The meal consists of a main dish, vegetable, starch, bread & butter, & milk.  In addition, ladies of the church supply cakes, pies, cookies, puddings, jello, various desserts each and every week.
We praise God for the way HE is blessing this ministry.
If one picture is worth 1,000 words then 10 should be enough to tell our story.
The King's Kitchen Update & Arlene
For the past 3 summers, 2010, 2011 and now 2012, we have had the joy of having Arlene, who is a school teacher and who attends First Baptist Church, volunteer to help us in the kitchen during her summer break.
Well, this time I'm happy to announce that since Arlene has retired from teaching, after 38 years - WOW,  we now have the blessing of having her help not just for the summer but she won't be leaving us in the fall!!
Pictrued left to right:  Mickey, Arlene, Sherry, Susan
Kent, who is the other permanent 8:30 a.m. kitchen crew, is not in this picture as he was with The Mission Team in El Salvador last Tuesday when this was taken.
Arlene not only brought her sweet self back to us but gave Sherry and I gift sacks containing Bath n Body Works foaming hand soap.  Mine was Warm Vanilla Sugar - Delightful!!!
Through last Tuesday, June 12th, we have averaged delivering 50 meals a week to the shut-ins.  We have 5 teams of  2 people on each team .  Sherry has keep our food purchases down to an average of  $1.65 per meal.  Our supplies, this year, have run $.15 a meal or a total of $1.80.  We are greatly helped keeping these per meal costs down by 4 different woman volunteering each week to bring desserts and by a great portion of our bread being donated to us by Panera Bread.
The King's Kitchen is truly a result of MANY hands and hearts having a part in this ministry.  You each know who you are and we, and these shut-ins, are blessed beyond measure by you.
Many thanks to you all!!!!!
This article ran in our local Coweta American newspaper yesterday.  I wanted to share it here with my readers who know we do this ministry to give you a complete view of the operation.  What an honor to be able to be Christs hands, feet, & heart in a very small way. Pictured in the back row, to the far right, is our wonderful Pastor Steve Lee.  The two young girls in the front, without King's Kitchen t-shirts, are 2 grandchildren of one of our volunteer couples who came to help this day, one for Community Service credit and the other because she is such a blessing.
 KitIn February of 2010, volunteers at the Coweta Assembly of God Church began ministering to the shut in and elderly at their church by delivering meals to them once a week.
Now, more than two years later, the ministry has blossomed into the King’s Kitchen and serves dozens in the community with hot meals each Tuesday.
The King’s Kitchen is coordinated by Mickey and Susan Joyce and operated by a dedicated team of volunteers who shop for, prepare and deliver meals to nearly five dozen local residents.
But the Joyces know there are many more out there in Coweta who could benefit from the service.
“Our purpose is to serve widows, widowers and the elderly who could use someone to check on them at least once a week,” Mickey Joyce explained. “We know there are people out there who need help that we do not know about. That’s who we want to reach.”
“We were up to 55 people at one point and we’re down to around 44 now. Many people have passed away, gone into a nursing home or moved somewhere else to live with family,” he added.
Susan said when volunteers deliver meals, they simply stick their head in the door, ask if the individual needs anything and offers to pray for them.
“A lot of people feel like it’s charity, but we don’t want them to feel that way it all. Charity is not the point,” she noted. “It’s just that we care and want to check in on them and know they are okay. We put no pressure on them to go to church.”
Since the first meal was served, the King’s Kitchen has never missed a Tuesday with exception of snow days when school was closed down in 2011.
“What started with 15 of our own church members spread over into Carriage Crossing, then we picked up some meals at Coweta Manor,” Susan noted. “Even though they get meals there, we still serve them because they are related to someone in our church. It lets them know someone cares for them.”
While the church board earmarked $1,000 for the program in the beginning to see how it took off, that money has yet to be used.
“We have never spent one cent of that $1,000. We have had total support from the church membership on this with extra donations,” Mickey noted. “ Everyone knows it’s a need that pulls at their heart and they want to help. We are very proud of that.”
Sherry Kelley is the King’s Kitchen’s primary cook and develops the menu with help from Susan.
“We would be lost without Sherry,” Susan said. “She has been so supportive for us. She does the shopping, buys the food and keeps us under budget.”
On Monday evenings, a cooking crew comprised of Kelli Hutchins, Frankie Horne, Athena Olden, Tammy Stiles, Bill and Valerie Scott and Jane Rogers help prepare the main course for Tuesday’s meal when needed.
Members of the Young at Heart Senior Adult Ministry prepare desserts each week on a rotating basis.
Meal deliveries are made by five teams of two people who help fill and seal trays, load delivered chests and run routes. They voluntarily furnish their own transportation and fuel.
Delivery teams include Tim and Jeanne Oswald, Betty Coyner,  Jimmie and Nellie Arnold, John and Phyllis Rathbone, Kathy Robinson, Eunice Jordan, Ronnie Young, Joi Kilgore, Wantha Deaton and Donna Weins.
Kent Rife is called the King’s Kitchen’s right hand man. The Joyces say he organizes supplies, helps with cooking and boxing desserts and fills in whenever needed to deliver.
Local school teacher Arlene Lamberson volunteers with the program each summer in whatever capacity she is needed.
The Joyces say while meals delivered by the King’s Kitchen help meet the nutritional needs of recipients, the visits by volunteers often meet an emotional need as well.
“If you are elderly and don’t get out and you’re at home all week long, just knowing someone is coming over every Tuesday around noon, you know they appreciate it,” the Joyces noted.
As an added gesture of friendship, the kitchen group sends a birthday card and ice cream on the Tuesday closest to each meal recipient’s birthday. They also deliver carnations to all of the women the week before Mother’s Day.
All meals are on the road by 11 a.m. for delivery by 12 Noon. Approximately one-fourth of the 44 meals delivered in mid-March were to couples – the rest go to individuals.
The meal service area is 71st Street to the north, Oneta Road to the West, the Arkansas River to the south and the Muskogee Turnpike to the east.
If anyone knows of someone who would benefit from receiving meals each Tuesday from the King’s Kitchen, contact the Coweta Assembly of God office at 918-486-3110.
